Hard As Nails
By Rachel | Album Picks | 4 Comments
I have been waiting for this debut album from this Minneapolis duo to come out for months… The time has finally arrived this Tuesday. This is a collaboration between Peter Pisano and Brian Moen who create a stunning album of songs that we can all relate to. A definite must for 2010 and Peter Wolf Crier is a band to keep your eye on. Enjoy! xx

Slow Show
By Rachel | Music Mix Up | 4 Comments
Feel ever so defeated this evening.
I have a frown that just won’t turn right side up.
I guess you can call it the Monday blues… Although, I think in the end it is a bit more than that.
What is more perfect then The National on this cloudy Monday evening? I can think of nothing else. I am sure you have come across The National in recent news, magazines or other music blogs but their fifth full length album, High Violet was released last week…We will get to that in coming days. but tonight I want to revisit one of my favorites off their 2007 album, The Boxer.
I love these lyrics…

xx
Standing at the punch table swallowing punch
can’t pay attention to the sound of anyone
a little more stupid, a little more scared
every minute more unpreparedI made a mistake in my life today
everything I love gets lost in drawers
I want to start over, I want to be winning
way out of sync from the beginningI wanna hurry home to you
put on a slow, dumb show for you
and crack you up
so you can put a blue ribbon on my brain
god I’m very, very frightening
I’ll overdo itLooking for somewhere to stand and stay
I leaned on the wall and the wall leaned away
Can I get a minute of not being nervous
and not thinking of my dick
My leg is sparkles, my leg is pins
I better get my shit together, better gather my shit in
You could drive a car through my head in five minutes
from one side of it to the otherI wanna hurry home to you
put on a slow, dumb show for you
and crack you up
so you can put a blue ribbon on my brain
god I’m very, very frightening
I’ll overdo itYou know I dreamed about you
for twenty-nine years before I saw you
You know I dreamed about you
I missed you for
for twenty-nine yearsYou know I dreamed about you
for twenty-nine years before I saw you
You know I dreamed about you
I missed you for
for twenty-nine years– The National, Slow Show

So Tired I Could Fall Over
By Rachel | Music Mix Up | 2 Comments
I am completely and utterly exhausted.
First day of swimming. I loved it. I missed it and it feels good to get back in the water and be alone with my thoughts and push myself to go farther and farther. I find I push myself more swimming than any other aerobic activity. I have been doing pretty good staying on a routine, I could do better. It has been difficult working out in the morning due to the fact that my body has gotten into a horrible habit of waking up at 4am and not being able to fall back to sleep for hours… So annoying. By the time I finally do get back to sleep it is already 6am and I have to get up at 6:30am to be on time to work. This schedule seems to be working out nicely though, getting off of work and going directly to work out. It works for me.
But whew, I am tired. Seriously, I have not been this tired since I started working out. This is a good thing. Hopefully I will be able to sleep through the night without any 4am sudden wake up moments.
Ok enough with all this banter, on to the music. I went into my bag of tricks and just pulled something out. There are a couple of albums I am listening to and digesting but for now lets just do a little music mix up. I am kind of falling in love with Andrew Belle’s music. His full length album which was released back in February is filled with a delightful mix of singer-songwriter pop songs, delicious catchy melodies and dreamy lyrics. I can’t say I loved every song from beginning to end but I can say that he is a new and upcoming artist that I am keeping my eye on.

Current Rotation
By Rachel | Album Picks | 4 Comments
Quick update: What I am currently listening to is the new album from the super group Broken Social Scene. Only 7 members participated in this 4th full length from the Toronto based band and I think it is their best album to date, more refined I suppose. In the past I felt like there were so many hands in the pot, it was kind of all over the place. This album seems a lot more cohesive which in turn makes it easier on the listener. Some fans (like Marcy from Lost in Your Inbox) may disagree, we will see. :-)
Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mothers of the world. Enjoy your weekend while listening to some great music I hope.

Motivation
By Rachel | Album Picks | 2 Comments
Must admit I have been feeling a bit blue lately…
Just feel like I am stuck in a rut and just can’t bring myself out of it. There are some changes I know need to be made and will be in the next few months but for now I got to do something for me, I have to make a change and do something GOOD for myself. I am getting off my booty and getting active. After work I will not pass go and I will not collect $200 dollars, I will change and go for a walk/run while the traffic dissipates. I will get my endorphins flowing and feel better on so many levels. It is time, I have hit bottom on the laziness front and it is time for that to change.
Now on to the music, I went on a hunt. I wanted to hear a new singer-songwriter like Cat Power or Emiliana Torrini and I found Jenn Grant a Canadian singer-songwriter who has a voice that is gorgeous and the music she creates helps you get rid of the day. I get lost in it, my favorite part.
p.s. Check out her most recent album Echoes. Love it.

Listening While I Cook
By Rachel | Album Picks | 5 Comments
Listening to Freelance Whales while my yummy turkey chili is cooking. Their debut album came out this year and has really received quite a bit of notice for their unique multi-instrumental experimentation and wonderful harmonic vocals. They really are a delight. If you like The Postal Service or a little Sufjan Stevens then chances are you will probably swoon for Freelance Whales.
Dinner time, enjoy.

Walk It Off
By Rachel | Album Picks | 5 Comments
I came home today and just needed to shake it all off… And it felt good, to let it all go. I don’t want to worry, just want to turn it all of off, forget everything… Just sit back and relax.
And I was thinking about it tonight when I got home… If I didn’t have music in my life I would be in a insane asylum, no joke.
It makes my day better everyday, instantly.
No Music = No Life.
Angus &Â Julia Stone came out with a new album this year, Down The Way. Beautiful. Listen and repeat.

This Is Spring
By Rachel | Album Picks | 4 Comments
It has been awhile… My apologies. I really have not had a chance to sit down and type out a few words about some of the new music I have been listening to recently, it has been a busy couple of weeks to say the least. I am here now though and wanted to share the new album from the multi-instrumental group Horse Feathers, Thistled Spring is dark and beautiful just like their 2008 album House With No Home, which was one of my favorite albums of 2008. Thistled Spring is a definite contender for favorite albums of 2010, it is just gorgeous.
