The beginning of this week has just slipped right by me. I have a show review to share for James Vincent McMorrow, but that will have to wait until the weekend at this point. I am tied up with work and school and I am terribly behind in my class readings. This semester is proving to be a bit more difficult than I expected. Sigh.
So how about some quirky atmospheric music from Mock Orange? I think that is a marvelous idea. Mock Orange has been creating music since 1998. Their latest full length album, Disguised As Ghosts, is not as kooky as some of their previous works. I think this is why I like it so much. Mock Orange is a band definitely worthy of your time and their new album deserves a listen.

So I am kind of obsessed with this song right now. CANT is the solo project of Grizzly Bear’s bassist Chris Taylor. A collection of chilled out electronic melodies that will have you contemplating love, life and painful heartbreak. I found that I connected with this album instantly. It is bluesy, emotional and experimental and I like it.

We Are The Tide

When I first heard the music of Blind Pilot in 2008 I knew immediately that it would go right onto my iPod. I was very pleased to hear they were recording a follow up. I wasn’t surprised with how much I enjoy their new album, We Are The Tide. Their upbeat sing along American acoustic folk is at its best. Their music stands out to me among so much just like it. There is no one who sings with the sincerity and honesty of lead singer Israel Nebeker. He is matched with the gently plucked and strummed acoustic guitar melodies and it all just makes my heart flutter.

I was looking forward to coming home and listening to some new music while zoning out in front of the computer, I couldn’t wait. I think it is the only thing that got me through.
The duo, Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor have really grown up on their second album, Paradise. Their sound has a much older vibe, filled with sultry vocals, soaring indie-pop sprinkled with just the right amount of folk to mellow it out. I am absolutely in love with this new album.

Let Down

I was nothing but angry today… Annoyed at every little thing. Then, of course, I end up more frustrated with myself because I am in this terrible mood. Â And I wonder why I can’t pull myself out of it? An endless destructive cycle. I can only hope that tomorrow will be a better one, I get another chance. I am working on becoming a person with the ability to change my attitude for the better before it spirals out of control. Sigh. Someday…
OK Computer 1997 (Capitol)
Something from the past tonight. xx
Transport, motorways and tramlines,
starting and then stopping,
taking off and landing,
the emptiest of feelings,
disappointed people, clinging on to bottles,
and when it comes it’s so, so, disappointing.Let down and hanging around,
crushed like a bug in the ground.
Let down and hanging around.Shell smashed, juices flowing
wings twitch, legs are going,
don’t get sentimental, it always ends up drivel.
One day, I’m gonna grow wings,
a chemical reaction,
hysterical and useless
hysterical andlet down and hanging around,
crushed like a bug in the ground.
Let down and hanging around.Let down,
Let down,
Let down. You know, you know where you are with,
you know where you are with,
floor collapsing, falling, bouncing back
and one day, I’m gonna grow wings,
a chemical reaction, [You know where you are,]
hysterical and useless [you know where you are,]
hysterical and [you know where you are,]let down and hanging around,
crushed like a bug in the ground.
Let down and hanging around.

Ghostbird, Zee Avi

I saw Zee Avi at an outdoor street festival in San Diego a few years back, you could hardly hear her sweet melodies over the loud shouting coming from an adjacent stage. It was so hot I thought I was going to melt into a puddle on the pavement. On Avi’s new album she has grown quite a bit, her sound is more focused. Her jazzy, soulful vocals are blended with a folksy bluesy melody that is a breath of fresh air. Possible contender for a spot on my year end list? I think so.

Shed Your Love

Time is slipping away.
Shed Your Love – The Helio Sequence
Keep Your Eyes Ahead 2008 (Sub Pop)
Drank the dark wine of the New York night
My shattered mind across the borderline
Spent the night in someone else’s arms
Shed your love, shed your love
Shed your love, shed your love
On a subway train before the dawn
The ride was short but my thoughts were long
Couldn’t figure what got in to me
Shed your love, shed your love
Shed your love, shed your love
Headed out to leave it all behind
Escape it all to see what I could find
Told you on the phone across the sea
Shed your love, shed your love
Shed your love, shed your love
Fell off of the plane in Amsterdam
Shop the streets to find out who I am
Come on back to me, reality
Shed your love, shed your love
Shed your love, shed your love
Home again to find that you were gone
On a subway train before the dawn
Said that you couldn’t stay and wait for me
Shed your love, shed your love
Shed your love, shed your love
Drank the dark wine of the New York night
My shattered mind across the borderline
Spent the night in someone else’s arms
Shed your love, shed your love
Shed your love, shed your love
Shed your love, shed your love

Stand By The Light

Get Well Soon is the sophomore release of Sarabeth Tucek. A beautifully sad album filled with somber melodies, swelling electric guitars and Tucek’s striking vocals that cut deep into your soul. Stunning. Oh how I needed this album tonight. I let it in and it stirred all this emotion around. I have to let go of a lot.
