I Would Sail Back To You…
Filed Under Album Picks | 6 Comments
Damien Jurado’s new album surprised me… It is mellow but not as dark as some of his previous work… Emotional as always though and I do enjoy the moody emotional story tellers… After all it is the emotion that makes this life all worth living… Everything Trying is just beautiful as is Paper Kite. Check out the blog I Am Caught In The Trees

About Time
Filed Under Album Picks | 5 Comments
This has been released for awhile… But I kind of have some catching up to do… This album is quite befitting to my mood, which comes as no surprise. I can praise Okkervil River all day and all night, they are fantastic. Although, I can’t say I love this album from beginning to end but there are certainly about 4-5 songs that can seriously be considered for a spot on a favorite tracks list. Part of Okkervil’s appeal for me is their amazing songwriting ability and their impeccable gift to make great music. Enjoy!

mp3: Calling And Not Calling My Ex
Calling And Not Calling My Ex
She was once mine
That smile that shines from the glossy magazine that stuck inside the Sunday Times
She was so sweet on Christmas Eve
With the snow set deep, when we went walking through the pines
I had just been fired and her first offer had arrived
And the new year would see her flying far away from me
Though I didn’t know it at the timeWith outstretched hands
Now she commands
A famous figure for every picture
And she stands up strong and she demands
And they deliver
Yeah, she’s a fixtureAnd it’s a mixture of dumb jealousy and fear that I might feel, should she appear
Just like it hasn’t been three years
And there’s a distance to her voice over the phone and that’s because she stands alone
While I’m still sitting hereGirl, you see me here on another quiet night
I will wait until another indistinguishable day arrives
I’ll decide where the light’s even and bright
Where my life’s sweet as it’s slightly, disappointedly, just gliding softly byAnd you won’t wait for me in some secluded stand of trees some Christmas Eve some god was kind enough to set aside
Although I’d love you to, I’m proud of you
God knows I’m feeling really stupid now
For having ever said goodbyeDuring the fight
I said, “Yeah right”
When you insisted that I visit, that you’d write
Now, I know you’re working hard so I never hear from you, and that’s fine
You look the same on TV as when you were mine
I walk in from the kitchen and I finger the remote control
I watch you from the distance, you go walking through the terminal
I remember ever instance, when you stung me
Oh, you’re so lovely
Oh, you’re so smartSo, go turn their heads, go knock them dead, go break their hearts
Go break their hearts
Baby, break their hearts
And I know you willThe Stand Ins 2008 (Jagjaguwar)

They Strike Again

But this time it’s personal. Not only is it a song that has yet to be released but we don’t even know if there is a full length version recorded! Back a couple of weeks ago a Lincoln Car Commercial came on and who was singing? Cat Power. What was she singing? “Space Oddity” by David Bowie. I think one of the Ford Marketing team members is a blogger…
And I don’t mean to mention something old but when the Olympics were on guess what one of their inspirational athlete story pieces was serenaded by? Band Of Horses, “The Funereal”. Also, I was in a Gap a couple of months back and Band Of Horses was playing in there as well. The song is genius and they took it and beat it to death with sticks and stones… I just want to scream, “They have other amazing songs you nit wits!” Seriously… I have heard it so much it has lost some of it’s original appeal. It is sad but true.
Of course I am making a bigger deal out of this for shits and giggles but there is some truth here… I do feel like music is sacred and I am happy that they are getting paid the big bucks to do these commercials and get this publicity. I also think the commercials and Olympics could credit the artist’s who are giving them their art, their music. But instead I see none of that, they don’t credit them at all and that my friends is what pisses me off. Alright, I will get off my soap box now… hehe

Worst. Week.
Filed Under News & Info. | 5 Comments
Hey folks, Pip here.
So Rachel has been sick all week, then better, then sick again with a really bad flu. So sick that she had to miss the show in San Diego with Beck and many others. A sad day indeed.
Of course this also meant total neglect of this place, but that will change this weekend at some point as soon as she gets back up on her feet. Send your love and warm wishes her way.

Radiohead in Chula Vista
Filed Under Music Mix Up | 6 Comments
Did seeing Radiohead live reach all my expectations and then some? Well… Radiohead delivered. Period. They are awesome and it was just solidified seeing them live. Radiohead is one of the most inventive and intelligent bands, the music they create has taken my breath away on more then one occasion; their music is a work of art.
The downfall was the venue and location of my seats… I had lawn seats, which wouldn’t have been that bad but this Cricket Ampitheatre had the WORSE big screens on each side of the stage you couldn’t see the band! I am little people! 5’2″ I couldn’t see shit… The reason I got stuck with lawn seats in Chula Vista (2 hours away) this time around was because when the tickets went on sale I was in the midst of having an on going debate with myself about whether or not I could afford them at the time because I was unemployed and BROKE so at the last minute right before they went on sale I knew I would regret it if I didn’t see them so I raced to my nearest Ticket Master and there were like 5-6 people in front of me… Sigh.
I still felt like it was worth it because they are such amazing band and I love them. From now on though no more doubting! Quite honestly front row tickets would be worth the price to see them live, they are just that good.

Film in general
Filed Under Film Box | 5 Comments
Howdie folks, Pip here.
My sister Tara found a cool quiz and sent it our way in which you have to guess the film by a single letter from the ‘one-sheet’ teaser poster of said film. Some of them were really easy, others I couldn’t come close to figuring out. See if you can beat my try of 23 correct without cheating! QUIZ
Not only do I love films, but I love the behind-the-scenes action too. I’m not talking about who Brad Pitt is shacked up with, I’m talking about knowing a funny story as told by the key grip on Lord of the Rings unit 14. In fact I think I love the that stuff as much as the films themselves. I have been known to see a film I love more than ten times, memorizing every last detail, but most surprising to some is the fact that I watch the fly on the wall docs that are on disc 2 of the special editions more than once too. I’ll even go so far as to show friends what I think are particularly funny parts of a commentary track. I have dreams of one day owning a rare collectable one-sheet and original film print collection.
When I tell you that a new Art House Theatre was just remodeled and had a grand re-opening literally two blocks away from my place, you’ll understand when I tell you that I was mind-bogglingly excited. The place is really nice, too – and should be after one million dollars in renovations! I went to go see a really cool doc the other day called “Man On Wire” which I will post a review up this weekend. Already I plan on going back for every single release our neighborhood theater shows. For all those lucky enough to have a local (or semi-local) art theater, show your support by going there as much as possible instead of the fancy multiplex.
Off of the soap box for me, let me know how you do on the quiz!
