Coldplay Makes Me Smile
Something about them just never fails to put a smile on my face…Viva La Vida doesn’t fail but so far I haven’t been floored either. I don’t know… I think I need to digest it a bit more.
Brian Eno, the ambient genius that he is, produced this fourth full length album of Coldplay’s. Viva opens with some atmospheric 80’s goodness and then Lost! comes on and it is inspiring with the hand clapping and bass drum beating, it marches straight into my heart… Cuteums! Then the album peaks with a couple of epic tracks, Lovers In Japan and Yes, both are really well composed. The title track is quite fantastic as well, along with Violent Hill and Strawberry Swing. I just think I need to listen and absorb it a little more to really know if this made it onto my favorites of 2008 list. I will be honest I am a little disappointed I suppose… I just don’t feel as I did when I first heard a Rush of Blood to the Head (2002) or X&Y (2005), but that is alright because some of my favorite albums of all time needed a bit more attention before I declared my undying love.

Eh to me Coldplay has gone well cold over the years.
You missed a good time at Warped Tour in ventura!! One hell of a blast with some awesome bands! I am thinking of hitting up the one in Fresno in August
“Well cold” That’s the Mississippi talking! hehe ;-)
Fresno Warped Tour, I print out all the flyers for some of the Warped Tour stuff. I am sorry I missed it but lets get together and go to the beach on one of your days off! :-) What are you doing for the fourth? I will call you.
im with you.
ive loved every album. loved.
but this isnt hitting me in the sweet spot.
Eh I work all that weekend – ugh
I was waiting for your opinion on Viva La Vida…I, too, have not completely digested it, but I do like it thus far. I think there is a lot of disappointment due to the fact that the band is reaching out and attempting to break new ground.
I’ve even read reviews that they are trying to be Radiohead…I’m not going to go that far, however.
My favorites off the album are Lovers in Japan/Reign of Love and Yes. Both are incredible.
Yeah I have heard all of this noise about them trying to be Radiohead and I really disagree. I also read a review from NME that just reamed Coldplay saying that they are trying to be just like U2! Just because they are a UK band doesn’t mean they are trying to be a band before them.
I think they are themselves and they are working on progressing their music, I just think they have progressed on this album as they have on Rush and then X&Y.
But I am seriously still digesting. I am with you though Lovers In Japan is amazing along with Yes. There are a lot of a fantastic songs on it, it is really growing on me when I think about it.
I’ve been reading that Coldplay was getting a lot of criticism for doing the same sort of thing over and over, so they tried to do something a bit different this time. I’ve liked what I’ve heard, but I agree with you, Rachel, a lot of times the songs that you really love have to have time to grow on you. It’s sort of like going to a museum — there’s a lot of amazing stuff there, but not many things I would take home to look at every day.
Rachel, Coldplay is not from the UK
I’m sorry, London!
