I do not usually do this but I have to say upon first listen… I really dislike that song WoodsBon Iver’s new Blood Bank EPJustin Vernon synthesizes his voice throughout the entirety of the song and it just drives me nuts. Really not a fan… I did hear remnants of it on For Emma, Forever Ago but I could see past it… There is no seeing past this. Now, the rest of the tracks on the EP are beautiful and gentle, perfect for a winter day. His voice warms my soul 99% of the time… Except when he decides to go synth happy.

p.s. this does mean that I do not care for the music of Kanye West because he too gets a little synth happy… Far too often for my taste.

p.s.s this track is really the star of the EP but the other two are really pretty gems as well.

Blood Bank EP 2009 (Jagjaguwar)

La Llorona by Beirut

Beirut’s new double EP, March of the Zapotec is set to be released February 17th and I am excited to say the least… This first part of the EP will be Latin inspired and from the little taste I have heard it sounds like the same amazing Beirut flare… The second part of the EP is a little unexpected as Condon revisits his pre-Beirut days under the name “Realpeople”, which is essentially the days of his home electronic creations… It should be interesting, definitely something to look forward to.

Tonight, let in the darkness… Turn the lights down and put on the new album from Antony and The Johnsons, The Crying Light… I want to make sense out of all of this… But we know better then that don’t we? Reason doesn’t live here anymore, left long ago. Fuck it. Who needs fucking reason anyway? Let us drown out the world and hide here forever… Seek shelter from the war raging on outside of these four walls… Turn the lights off… Sit here in silence. Ashes to ashes and dust to dust.

The Crying Light 2009 (Secretly Canadian)

p.s. The Crying Light is beautiful, dark and honest from the beginning to the end… It will take your breath away. Sit down and lose yourself in this gorgeous music.

I think it is really quite interesting that it has been miserably dry here in the West for the better part of 2 weeks now and since the holiday new music releases have been scarce… Then today the clouds rolled in and the temperature dropped about 10 degrees, there is rain in the air… I come home and check emusic and I officially have no more downloads for the month… That is correct I used all of my 75 downloads all in one sitting. It is not uncommon but still never so fast… Andrew Bird, Antony and the Johnsons and Bon Iver all have been some of the first to release new music for 2009 and I am excited to listen and absorb.

While I am doing that please do have a listen to an EP from this UK based duo, Slow Club. Their EP was released in 2008 but has just come available on emusic about a week ago. Charles And Rebecca create delicious folk that is a delight… I love them.

Lets Fall Back In Love 2008 (Moshi Moshi Records)

Tomorrow you will find me dancing in the streets for joy, I will be singing away as I am ecstatic that the administration that has been in office for the last 8 years is finally coming to an end. Finally.

It has been so frustrating and we have a lot of work to do to clean up the mess that this country is in right now. I am excited that for once the candidate that I supported is finally able to represent me.

I feel this country is in good hands, Obama is selecting an excellent well rounded administration unlike his predecessor who seemed to choose to surround himself with his good friend Bob and Peggy Sue. I am ready… I have been ready for quite some time… I have waited patiently… And it is about damn time we got someone but a white man in office to represent this melting pot of immigrants we call America.  Tomorrow will be one of America’s brightest hours… I can not wait.

I doubt everything… I can’t help it. It can be an issue at times and I try to let go but it always comes back to rear it’s ugly head… Frustrating… Tiring.

Go on over and check out the Contrast Podcast where you can listen to a bunch of us all talk about feet hehe and you can listen to my intro as well as my selected track… Feet are awesome.

I got pulled over yesterday with my mom in the car… Yes, that is right, oh dear. My mom is a funny lady, but good god she is nuts! I knew he was going to pull me over as soon as I saw him behind me because my registration tags are expired. Fucking registration… It is going to be the death of me… Every year? Really? You would think my registration would be cheap by this point however,  I think I am a parking ticket magnet. Actually, it is not really that bad but I had a short stint at this job in LA and well some of us had to park on the street and blah blah I forgot about them so add those to my registration and it is expensive. Anyways so there my mom is sitting next to me going,  “OMG! Why is he pulling you over?” I tell her that my tags are expired… “Oh well you have to take care of that.” Thinking to myself, “no shit”. So my window goes down and I put on the charm and he didn’t give me a fix it ticket because I really could do without any more tickets in my life.

On another note… I am staying in tonight to watch the Golden Globe Awards… Yes, I am a little bit of a celebrity whore sometimes. But damn it so many good shows up for awards such as Californication, The Office, 30 Rock, Weeds. Speaking of television The Coral Sea was featured on last weeks new episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Santogold’s Lights Out was also featured (love it).

I missed this new album from The Coral Sea, it is pretty good. It has a handful of songs on it that made it on to the pod. Worth checking out.

The Wrestler

The Wrestler

I remember Pi and watching it the first time vividly.  When it became easy to find was right around the time I was beginning to take notice of these types of films.  It had a profound impact on me and I consider it to be one of the experiences that molded the way I watch movies.  Aronofsky followed up Pi with Requiem for a Dream, one I do not believe anyone walked away from unscathed.  I made his third film, The Fountain, my almost favorite of 2006, one most would completely disagree with me on.  Like all the small cadre of my favorite directors, I anticipate their future projects like a little boy on Christmas Eve.  Sometimes my expectations are up so high that if Jesus Christ himself walked out of the screen and sat down next to me to share popcorn I would shrug my shoulders and yawn.  It’s a curse.  I was not disappointed with The Wrestler.

Aronofsky is starting to make this look easy.  The story moves forward effortlessly through waters most other movies get bogged down in with sap and over-writing.  Watching this film was more like watching a documentary or following him around.  Much has already been written about Mr. Rourke’s performance, and I do hope he works some more and lays off the plastic surgery.  He turned the role into something you couldn’t imagine anyone else doing, not even the real guy this story was loosely based on.  Marissa Tomei has been showing off her body quite a lot lately, god bless her.  But the beautiful thing is not her courage to show off her body, but to take the parts she’s taking as the characters are complicated and anything but the damsels we’re so used to.

This is a deeply touching story about a man so far down on his luck it’s almost painful to watch.  The stuff that really stuck me was the estrangement with his daughter, something I have experienced in a way.  Even though the man is alone, broken and a pauper, he does what he knows in his soul he was put on this earth to do.  In spite of everything, getting to the end will make you smile with a sigh.

Along with my concern with my use of ellipses. This is an ellipsis (…) and I think I am addicted to using them. Just look at this page, I use them all the time! This is not a good thing. I need ellipsis rehab I think.

Benoît Pioulard released another album in 2008 entitled Temper,  it contains another one of my favorite songs of 2008 that I have not yet shared here on Untitled Records. Enjoy!
