All Time Favorite #8
I am going to go ahead and make a bold statement here, so do prepare yourselves:
Best opening shot ever is in Kill Bill Vol. 1, the black and white shadows along with Nancy Sinatra’s beautiful haunting voice made this shot easier to take in and take in I did. I just think it is really well done in every way, if it doesn’t grab you and suck you into this film, I honestly don’t think anything would.I am one of those oddities who preferred Volume 1 over Volume 2, I mean in my opinion it is really no contest:
1. Best opening shot
2. Favorite Nancy Sinatra song
3. A chick who is out for revenge kicks ass
4. And probably one of the greatest of great bad ass speeches ever:
O-Ren Ishii: [after she cuts off Tanaka’s head, in Japanese] So you all will know the seriousness of my warning, I shall say this in English.
O-Ren Ishii: [in English] As your leader, I encourage you from time to time, and always in a respectful manner, to question my logic. If you’re unconvinced that a particular plan of action I’ve decided is the wisest, tell me so, but allow me to convince you and I promise you right here and now, no subject will ever be taboo. Except, of course, the subject that was just under discussion. The price you pay for bringing up either my Chinese or American heritage as a negative is… I collect your fucking head. Just like this fucker here. Now, if any of you sons of bitches got anything else to say, now’s the fucking time!
[pause]
O-Ren Ishii: I didn’t think so.
O-Ren Ishii: [calmly, in Japanese] Gentlemen, this meeting is adjourned.
Like I said no contest really, my All Time Favorite #8:
Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) (mp3 expired) – Nancy Sinatra

i was just watching that scene the other day. i’m with you–volume 1 is waaaaay better than volume 2
I loved Vol 1. I hated Vol 2. I thought it was built up really well in the first but lost a lot of power in the second. So I just pretend there is no vol. 2.
Well it’s cool to be hatin’ Vol. 2. I personally love the most the last one I watched… just depends on my mood as to which I throw in. They’re one phenomenal film that’s to be sure.
I remember that shot well, the theater I was in was a band full of QT miscreants and so they were frothing at the mouth cheering and jibing. When that gunshot rang out… silence.
I remember thinking… oh, fuck, here we go.
rachel hit the big time:
best week ever
:-)
Sweet! At least I know I am not the only one who didn’t like Vol. 2. Like Andy said it was built up so well…What did you guys think about the scene where she digs her way out of being buried alive?
drainpip, hehe see I am not the only one!!! :-P just messing with you.
I remember thinking… oh, fuck, here we go. I forgive the fact that you are a Vol.2 lover just because you nailed that right on.
And Tad thanks so much for the heads up on the link love, not too shabby. But I have got to give the credit to Nancy Sinatra for this one, you can’t deny that she’s a legend.
OMG! that is so freaking cool! i feel like a know a celebrity or something! you rule, sister–you and nancy sinatra!
I likewise was unaware that preferring Vol 1 made one an “oddity”. I can’t say, as others have, that I “hated” Vol 2. The scene trailer alone was worth the price of admission. But on the whole Vol. 1 was more memorable.
I must admit though I was a little sad when O-Ren Ishii died. She was cool.
“The scene trailer…” should have been “The scene in the trailer…” i.e. the sword fight with Elle
I liked both Vol 1 & Vol 2. I think too much was expected of the latter after the former was so stunning.
It was the same with Jackie Brown. Not as good as Dogs or Fiction, but still a more than decent enough movie that didn’t deserve anything like the panning it got.
Tarantino is like Morrissey. He’s never allowed to issue three great bits of work back-to-back. It’s the unwritten law of the critics
You crack me up Marcy, thanks. You could take both Nancy and I in a “People Who Rule” contest. ;-)
Mentok, yeah I’ll give you that the Trailer scene was pretty cool…And I was actually torn because on the one hand I was cheering for The Bride (Thurman) because well she was the protagonist but O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu) was such a bad ass that I wouldn’t have mined it too much if O-Ren Ishii took Blondie out. hehe What? She was a bad ass!
I think JC gets the award for summing it up and then saying it so eloquently.
But I actually liked Jackie Brown the most and I can pretty much watch the movie anytime, probably because it is not as violent as the other two. I am not a big fan of violence, even though I know it is fake…To this day I have yet to see a certain scene in Syriana even though I have seen that movie 5 times now. (damn these girlie girl tendencies)
